A brave Carlow man is sleeping with one eye open after a hilarious prank on his girlfriend goes viral.
Patrick Bermingham decided to have a little fun with his girlfriend Amy Keegan on Monday after buying a fake scratch card online.
And the cunning plan from Patrick ended up going viral when Amy’s reaction to winning big on the fake ticket was posted to Facebook.
Patrick told the Irish Mirror: “I was on Amazon a couple of weeks ago browsing and came across the fake scratch cards and ordered them.
“Amy is still working, she is a frontline worker, and is usually in work when the post arrives so I thought I was safe,
“But that morning when they arrived in the post she brought the envelope into me and asked what it was.
“I played dumb and pretended I didn’t know and let on I was struggling to open the tape on it as she was just about to run out the door to work and thankfully she hadn’t the time to wait.”
Patrick explained that, when Amy returned from work, he suggested the pair go for a walk in a nearby park.
Bringing the fake ticket in his pocket, Patrick stopped in a petrol station and bought another, real scratch card.
He said: “I bought a real one and on the way out to the car across the forecourt I started the video recording and gave Amy the fake scratch card and a key to scratch it.
“I positioned the phone on the door handle just as I had rehearsed earlier that day and she started scratching.
“And what unfolded couldn’t have worked out any better.”
Amy is seen slowly revealing her card before her face begins to light up.
“I think I won €50,000,” she screams.
“I had that dream about the nits, saying it would bring good fortune.
“I’m going to faint.”
After a few minutes of excitement and brilliant acting from Patrick, Amy begins to read the fine print on the card.
She reads: “Claim forms should be completed in full and are exclusively available in your dreams. keep in a safe place so you always know where it is and remember the day you thought you won an absolute fortune.”
The penny drops and Amy realises she is on the end of a cruel prank from her partner Patrick.
He told the Irish Mirror: “I was a bag of nerves. I don’t usually get nervous but I really was doing this prank.
“I wasn’t sure what her reaction would be but knowing Amy and her brilliant personality and sense of humour she seen the funny side and I lived to tell the tale.”
The video has been viewed over 60,000 times on Facebook with 2,000 people reacting to the post.
One viewer said: “Terrible thing to do, but brilliant at the same time.”
Another wrote: “I haven’t got a laugh like that in a long time. Poor Ay though that was just cruel!”
