About the Louisiana Lottery

The modern LA Lottery began in 1991 after legislation was passed in 1990 to create a lottery that would increase state revenue without raising taxes.

The Louisiana Lottery ranks 2nd among other U.S. jurisdictional lotteries in the percentage of revenue transferred to its government. At least 35% of all LA Lottery revenue is transferred annually to the state treasury. In 2004, the Louisiana constitution made it such that Lottery proceeds be earmarked for the Minimum Foundation Program (MFP), which benefits K-12 public education in the state. Additionally, the first $500,000 in annual Lottery proceeds is set aside to fund problem gambling programs. As of the 2019 fiscal year, the Lottery had transferred more than $3.7 billion to the state treasury, and more than $184.3 million was transferred from sales in FY 2019 alone.

* Lotto’s match-5 and match-4 prizes are pari-mutuel. A pari-mutuel prize is determined by dividing the prize pool equally among the winners, and may vary for each drawing. Lotto is structured to average approximately $1,000 and $50 for the match 5 and match 4 prize levels respectively. The jackpot prize is also a pari-mutuel prize and will be divided equally among all jackpot-winning tickets. If the jackpot is not won, the prize is carried over and added to the jackpot prize pool of the next drawing.
