Claiming Minnesota Lottery Prizes

Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, there have been some changes in the way you claim prizes in Minnesota. You can find updates on our dedicated Coronavirus Lottery Updates page.

If you’ve won a Minnesota Lottery prize, then you have one year from the date of the drawing or from the announced date of closure for a scratch ticket game to claim your prize. Depending on how you bought your ticket, you have a number of ways to redeem a prize.

All wins of $50,000 and below may be claimed by mail; scroll down for more information.

If you bought a ticket from an authorized retailer, then prizes worth $599 or less can be claimed from a retailer or by mail.

Prizes of $600 and above may be claimed at the Lottery’s Roseville headquarters; you’ll need to complete a claim form.

For prizes over $50,000, call the Lottery at 1-888-568-8379 or 651-635-8273 for information on claiming options.

Prizes worth more than $5,000 will have 24 percent for federal taxes and 7.25 percent for state taxes deducted before the prize is paid. Non-Minnesota residents, including Canadians, will still be subject to the 7.25 percent tax on any large prizes, but they will also need to consult a financial advisor to learn more about any taxes they may still owe.

History of the Minnesota Lottery

The Minnesota Lottery has been in operation since 1989, as state voters approved its establishment by 57 percent in a constitutional amendment proposed in 1988. The first tickets went on sale on April 17th 1990 and by the end of the week the Minnesota Lottery had hit $15 million in sales. Powerball tickets became available to state residents in August of that same year, while Mega Millions tickets went on sale in Minnesota in January 2010.

MN Lottery revenue is allocated to the state’s General Fund; about 24 cents of every $1 raised through lottery tickets is returned to the state in some form of aid. When Minnesotans play lottery games in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, they are directly helping educational initiatives, health services, public safety and local governments. Any remaining revenue is then distributed to the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, the Natural Resources Fund and the Game and Fish Fund. You can help preserve Minnesota’s natural beauty just by buying a lottery ticket!

The All or Nothing lottery was cancelled in June 2017.
