Game Information
The North Dakota Lottery only offers multi-state lottery games to its players as per Section 25 of Article XI of the state’s Constitution. This includes the following games:
Instant win games, also known as “scratch-offs” or “scratchcards”, are not sold by the North Dakota Lottery.
Claiming Prizes
Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, there have been some changes in the way you claim prizes in North Dakota. You can find updates on our dedicated Coronavirus Lottery Updates page.
If you win a North Dakota Lottery prize, you will have 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim your prize. Once that deadline has passed, the Lottery will allocate the winnings to the state’s General Fund.
Prizes worth $599 or less can be redeemed at any North Dakota Lottery retailer. Prizes worth $600 or more need to be claimed at the North Dakota Lottery offices in Bismarck or by mail. Make sure that you complete a claim form!
Any prize worth $5,000 or more will be subject to a federal withholding tax of 25 percent as well as a state tax of 3.22 percent.
History of the North Dakota Lottery
The North Dakota Lottery was established in 2004 after voters approved an amendment to the North Dakota Constitution, allowing the Peace Garden State to “join a multi-state lottery for the benefit of North Dakota”. Powerball tickets went on sale in 2004 and Mega Millions tickets became available in January 2010.
To date, North Dakota Lottery players have picked up more than $81 million in cash prizes. Out of every dollar raised in ticket sales, 26 cents is allocated to the state’s General Fund, which amassed an average daily balance of $3.2 billion during the 2014 fiscal year. If you’re living in North Dakota, it really does pay to play the lottery!

Prizes less than $600 can be claimed instantly at an authorized retailer. “Pick and Click” players with a winning account can request a withdrawal which will be processed within 10-14 days, then mailed to the winner.

Yes, the ND Lottery has a membership option on their website that allows for online ticket purchases.
About the North Dakota Lottery
The ND Lottery was founded in 2002 and officially began in 2004 after voter approval of Measure 2, an initiative constitutional amendment of the North Dakota Constitution. North Dakota is one of the few states that only partakes in MUSL (Multi-State Lottery Association) games, and cannot sell in-state games. 24% of all revenue from ND Lottery ticket sales goes to the State General Fund.
