Oregon State men’s basketball opens 2020-21 season against Cal Bears

CORVALLIS – Oregon State unveiled several men’s basketball newcomers Wednesday and they left a significant impression as the Beavers held off surging California 71-63 in the 2020-21 season opener at Gill Coliseum.

Nicholls State transfer Warith Alatishe had 16 points and eight rebounds to lead the Beavers to a non-conference win over Pac-12 foe California.

Rodrigue Andela a 6-8 JC transfer forward, pulled down 11 rebounds to help Oregon State amass a 43-32 edge over the Bears on the boards.

The Beavers led by as many as 14 points during the second half, but California made it interesting by cutting the deficit to five during the final two minutes.

Senior guard Ethan Thompson had 15 points and six assists for the Beavers.

Matt Bradley led California with 21 points, though the Bears lead guard shot just 5 of 16 from the floor.

The game was scheduled Tuesday after Colorado State had to pull out of the multi-team event due to a COVID-19 program shutdown. California and Oregon State play Northwest University, an NAIA school from Bellevue, on Thursday and Friday respectively in Gill Coliseum.

Wednesday’s game marked the first time Oregon State has played a Pac-10/12 school in a non-conference game since 1995. The last time OSU faced California in a non-conference game was the 1984 Far West Classic.

Oregon State led 36-31 at halftime after shooting 50 percent from the floor during the first half.

The Beavers led for most of the opening 20 minutes, briefly giving up the lead at 20-18 on three free throws by Matt Bradley OSU responded with a 9-0 run, all the points coming from Alatishe and Calloo.

Oregon State continued to pile on just after halftime, starting the second half with a 10-2 run, capped by Thompson’s 3-pointer. The Beavers lead grew as large as 13 points, but the Bears ran off seven consecutive points to chop the deficit to six midway through the second half.

Oregon State rebuilt a double-digit lead, which it held until the final three minutes. The scrappy Bears got to within 67-62 with 1:38 remaining, but the Beavers were able to close out the win at the free throw line.
