Solomon Jackson Jr. made a promise more than 40 years ago that he is still fulfilling after buying a $2 lottery ticket years ago. That $2 lottery ticket turned into $260 million in winnings in the Powerball … Ещё Mega Millions lottery, and he decided to give a percentage of his winnings to higher education. He graduated from Morris College and was honored this week for his $10 million donated he made 10 years ago that has funded scholarships and school improvement and expansion projects.

Sumter Today: Sumter United Ministries gives thanks this holiday season.

Sumter United Ministries: Rebuilding Lives helps those in need year-round, but they go above and beyond for the holidays.

The faith-based emergency services nonprofit held its annual Giving Thanks program this week ahead of Thanksgiving. They get to know their clients throughout the year, and their services are more than a simple handout.

Through the ministry, they’re trying to rebuild lives.
With adjustments made for COVID-19, they distributed about 150 Thanksgiving meal boxes to individuals and families in need, and we stopped by to learn more about the program.

Sumter Today: Alice Drive Middle School marks another STEM milestone

Alice Drive Middle School made waves when it became nationally STEM certified in 2015.

Then, they had five STEM-specific elective classes focusing on science, technology, engineering and math curriculum.
Now, the middle school has 15 STEM electives, and STEM is integrated into all content areas.

This month, Alice Drive became the first middle school in the nation to achieve the national recertification and just the fourth overall to wave the recertification banner.

We stopped by the school to get a peak at their celebration and learn more about why they think STEM is important.

Sumter Today: An annual operation in Sumter brings gift shoeboxes to children in need.

One sign that Christmas is approaching in Sumter is the annual Operation Christmas Child gift shoebox fundraiser.

Westside Baptist Church Sumter, SC distributes empty shoeboxes to churches and individuals to promote the annual gift campaign, and the boxes are filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items.

We stopped by the collection site this week to learn more about the fundraiser and where they will go from here.

Sumter elected a new mayor on Tuesday after the general election triggered a runoff when none of the six original candidates got more than 50% of the vote.

David Merchant, a current city councilman, received more than 60% of the vote in Tuesday’s runoff, and he’ll now follow in the footsteps of Joe McElveen, Sumter’s longest-serving mayor who didn’t run for reelection after 20 years.

We sat down with Mayor-Elect David Merchant today to get to know him and learn about his hopes for Sumter as he takes on this new role.
