Ohio Syndicate Finally Collects $1 Million Powerball Prize
Monday December 11 th 2017
A syndicate of seven Powerball players has finally collected a prize of $1 million after originally winning the sizeable sum in mid-August. Luckily, the group received their reward from the Ohio Lottery just in time for Christmas as each member pocketed a pre-tax total of $142,857.
Having matched the numbers 6, 7, 16, 23 and 26 in the drawing on Wednesday August 23rd, the syndicate staked a claim for their prize a week later. However, the winners were forced to wait until just two weeks before Christmas to get their hands on the colossal prize.
The Winners Revealed
The seven winners were revealed as Doug Horstman (Liberty Township), Sanshiro Abe (Pittsburgh, Pa), Kyle Caiola (Seven Hills), Brian Chervon (McKeesport, Pa), Matt Flickinger (Cleveland Heights), John Haller II, (Parma) and Wayne Yanetta (North Ridgeville). Given the group’s geographical spread and their refusal to speak to the press, state lottery officials were unwilling to speculate on how the winning players were connected. “We do not have information on how they all were connected in purchasing the winning ticket,” said Marie Kilbane of the Ohio Lottery.
The clan purchased their Quick Pick ticket from Johnson’s Grocery on Hamilton Mason Road in Fairfield Township, 30 miles north of Cincinnati, prior to the draw. Sue Rozhon, a member of the store’s staff, commented on the news: “We had heard all kinds of rumors about who won it,” she said. With little concrete evidence, colleagues were forced to rely on hearsay, although no one could have guessed that a sizeable syndicate would step forward: “We had not heard that seven people had won it. I am glad for them,” she smiled.
One Number Away From $758.7 Million
The team were in possession of one of 34 $1 million winning tickets on the night of the draw and were just the Powerball (4) away from clinching an incredible $758.7 million jackpot. That honour went to Massachusetts resident Mavis Wanczyk, who correctly matched all six numbers in the draw to claim the biggest single ticket prize in lottery history.
