Windows 7 – How to disable WinSAT.exe?

WinSAT.exe (SAT is acronym for: System Assessment Tool) is a constituent par of Windows 7 OS. It is a rating tool with purpose to measure a system’s performance and capabilities. It rates your computer on a ranging scale from 1 to 7.9. WinSAT.exe rates 5 subsets of your computer system, including processor, RAM, hard disk, graphics, and gaming graphics. It uses a special algorithm to calculate so called “Windows Experience Index”.

If you have problem with “phantom” process taking 30-95% of your CPU, start your Task Manager and check the name of process under CPU usage. If WinSAT.exe consumpting your CPU time, you can safely disable it by the following way:

1. Go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Task Scheduler
2. Browse to Microsoft\Windows\Maintenance
3. Select “WinSAT” task
4. Under “Actions” choose “Disable”.

winsat assesses various features, capabilities, and attributes of a computer running WindowsВ VistaВ®.

Syntax

Assessments

Assesses the ability of a system to display the Aero desktop effects.

Assesses the ability of a system to run Direct 3D applications, such as games.

Assesses system memory bandwidth by simulating large memory to memory buffer copies.

Assesses the performance of disk drives.

Assesses the performance of the CPU(s).

Assesses the performance of video encoding and decoding (playback) using the Direct Show framework.

Assesses the performance of video decoding (playback) using the Media Foundation framework.

Enumerates relevant system information.

Runs a set of pre-defined assessments and saves the data in an XML file in %systemroot%\performance\winsat\datastore.

Remarks

Please review the parameters for an assessment before running it. Assessment parameters are required for accurate testing.

Running an assessment without parameters may result in system performance problems or system instability.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to use winsat. The command must be executed from an elevated command prompt window.

To open an elevated command prompt window, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and click Run as administrator.
